Penny Berens is an embroiderer or tex1le ar1st living in Granville Beach, Nova Sco1a. Penny’s journey with embroidery began at the age of four under the guidance of her mother and grandmothers. She later took this grounding to more formal studies by earning a City and Guilds diploma in embroidery and design from Dundee College in Scotland. Berens work has evolved over the years from tradi1onal embroidery through machine free-form embroidery to her current process of eco dyeing natural tex1les and recording on this cloth her experiences in the coastal woodlands of Nova Sco1a. She also works on journal type pieces that record the passage of 1me by small daily s1tchings which, when assembled, grow into major installa1ons over 1me. These projects can last from one year to four years.
