The title of the work is a reference to a twin-cylinder engine that revolutionized the way inshore fishermen went about their daily work in the early part of the 20th century. No longer did they have to depend on wind and sail to get to the fishing grounds and to tend their lobster traps. The engines were often used on the open-hulled fishing boats of the time. The name of the motor also portrays a hardscrabble life, irony not lost on the fishermen.
