The gift-giving season is approaching! And who doesn't appreciate the gift of art? Did you know we feature not just the work of Laurie Swim at our gallery, but two other artists as well? There's a diverse spectrum of works and products available to suit any taste. Here is just a sample of the brilliant talent we're honoured to have in our midst.
Laurie Swim
In the Moment is inspired by a photograph Laurie took of her nephew Luke and his son Kyler entering the water at her family cottage on the Sable River in Nova Scotia. The dog was added to give relevance and context. The figures of the man and boy were made up of several applications of hand-dyed fabrics overlaid with chiffon to blend them. The water background setting was painted and then quilted. Visit Laurie's catalogue to see more of what's available.
Hangama Amiri
Hangama Amiri returned to Lunenburg this summer to create a new project that explores the natural landscape of the South Shore region of Nova Scotia. Each piece contains elements that focus on the vegetation, the land, familiar objects, and the impact of the ocean, whether seen or not seen. The echoes of the surrounding water are present in every work and each is titled according to experiences and conversations the artist has had with local residents.
The piece pictured here, titled Lockeport, Nova Scotia, is one of 14 paintings in Amiri's series, Ocean's Edge. Two in this series have been acquired by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and several others have been purchased by private collectors but we still have a few left! Hangama Amiri is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (BFA 2012) and this fall she is the Canadian Fulbright Scholar at Yale University, where she will pursue her MFA. She is the recipient of numerous honours including the 2013 Portia White Protégé Award and an Honourable Mention at the 2015 RBC Canadian Painting Competition.
Chippie Kennedy
At an early age, Chippie Kennedy developed a keen interest in the presentation of the human figure and the body as a hanger or show-piece for clothing. This led her to pursue a degree in Fashion Design where she explored the movement of the body and cloth and what it presents to the viewer. Soon after, she pursued a design career on 7th Ave in New York City.
Chippie’s fascination with texture and movement grew stronger with time, pushing her to explore the deeper qualities of the human figure and the form itself through the mediums of clay and bronze. The transition from cloth to clay was absolutely a natural move.
Ms. Kennedy’s work has been recognized for excellence and is in private collections in the US, Canada, Mexico, Italy, France and the UK. Chippie has recently established her permanent studio in the historic Lunenburg Academy in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Click here to view the entire 2018 catalogue.
