Mermaids Purse Giclée Print
This piece represents a way of life that has almost disappeared on the Eastern Seaboard of the North Atlantic with the slow demise of the fishery. Men ‘going to sea’ is always a dangerous profession and many homes had an upper story porch aptly named a ‘widows walk’ where women folk would watch for a son, father, brother or husband to return home. Mermaid’s Purse is the common name for an egg sack of the skate fish and in this piece refers to the black shape on the clothes line.
