The dory, a small craft, was designed in the mid-1800s for use in the Grand Banks fishery off Newfoundland. A schooner could carry up to 16 dories nestled on its deck. The fishermen set out into the ocean, one or two to a dory, to set miles of baited lines on the treacherous Atlantic. The Lunenburg dory is distinguished by its ‘knees’, the dory rib frames. They are naturally grown, cut from the lower trunk and root of the tree. The dory has remained popular for inshore fisherman and for recreational rowers. The Dory Shop in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia carries on the tradition of dory making.
