Men ‘going to sea’ is always a dangerous profession and many homes had an upper story porch aptly named a ‘widows walk’ where women folk would watch for a son, father, brother or husband to return home. Mermaid’s Purse is the common name for an egg sack of the skate fish and in this piece refers to the black shape on the clothesline.
